Lifeguard

There's more to our beach than sunshine and cool dips. You may not realize what's behind the scene.

I’ve been following our Long Beach Lifeguard’s with questions on the lips and camera in the hand.

I’ve spoken to a few and learned a some things. Sure, it’s nice to sit on a perch and take in the rays. But being a lifeguard is a very, very, responsible job. One that can be a bit boring for long stretches but demand focus, strength, agility and incredible stamina the next. Lives depend on it.

You might not think it’s such a big deal job, just a cushy day in the sun...until you are being pulled back from the edge of eternity by one of them.

Lifeguards must be in great physical shape and stay that way to work our Long Beach shores. They are tested again and again to see that they are.

I attended the 2017 Long Beach Lifeguard Tournament at Edwards Blvd recently. The East, West and Central crews competed in all the rescue techniques.

I made a photo video of the event that gives a good look at what they are all about. The astute observer will see dedication in these serious servers of the public good. Sure you'll see it in their conditioning, you'll see it in their speed. But mostly you'll see it…in their eyes:
