Little League Trains Lifesaving Equipment, Year After On-Field Tragedy

LONG BEACH, NY — Gregg LaPenna has made it his mission to have CPR and AED (defibrillator) equipment at Town of Hempstead parks.

LaPenna's son died after collapsing on a little league field in April 2022. Lazar LaPenna was 10 years old.

The elder LaPenna has committed to ensuring the safety of other youngsters in the community.

The Town of Hempstead is installing AED devices at Point Lookout Park. A free AED and CPR certification is being provided for the little league coaches on April 27 at 7 p.m.

It will take place at the Skudin Surf Shack on the board between Long Beach Road and Riverside Boulevard.

Will and Cliff Skudin of Long Beach's Skudin Surf have donated their time to teach the equipment.

Last sumnmer, LaPenna filed a $10 million lawsuit with the Town, claiming a lack of medical equipment at the ball field led to his son's death after an epileptic seizure.
