LONG BEACH, NY — Earlier this month, the City of Long Beach announced that it would be keeping life guards on staff on weekends through the end of September, so beachgoers could enjoy an extended summer season. Last week, the city decided to reverse that decision.

Citing cooler temperatures and decreased beach attendance, the city said on Friday that it would no longer have lifeguards on duty on the weekends.

At the beginning of September, the city joined with municipalities across Long Island to announce an "extended summer" that would have lifeguards on duty on area beaches through the end of September. But with Labor Day gone and temperatures beginning to chill, the city is sending the lifeguards home.
