Long Beach Firefighter, Police Officer Save Drowning Victim

The firefighter ran from his home to the beach to help save the man's life.

A City of Long Beach firefighter and police officer save the life of a man who nearly drowned while swimming in the water on Friday.

According to the fire department, a call came in at 2:38 p.m. for an unresponsive man in the water at Tennessee Avenue and Ocean Beach Park. Justin Fitzmartin, a volunteer firefighter and EMT who lived just down Tennessee Avenue, ran from his home to the shore.

Fitzmartin pulled the man out of the water, checked him for a pulse and began CPR. Minutes later, Officer Michael Corbett arrived on the scene and began to assist Fitzmartin. The two completed two full rounds of CPR and revived the man.

They kept him stable until an LBFD ambulance arrived and transported him to the South Nassau Emergency Department, where he was admitted in critical condition.
