The Long Beach City Council honored two police officers today that saved the life of a resident who tried to kill her self last month.

According to the city, officers Ryan Kraemer and Lukas DiKranis responded to Maryland Avenue and Ocean Beach Park at 1:12 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19. Once there, a woman told them that her friend went into the water to commit suicide.

The early morning was extremely dark, and a heavy fog limited visibility even more. But DiKranis was able to spot the woman in the water just off the jetties on Maryland Avenue. Kraemer jumped into the water and swam 150 feet to the woman and started bringing her in to shore. DiKranis then got into the water to help, and the two carried the woman from the water to the beach. Shortly later, the woman was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation.
