Long Beach Residents Petitioning For Safer Lido Boulevard
The petition, which already has more than 1,000 signatures, lists safety improvements that parents want, like more visible crosswalks.

A group of Long Beach residents have started a petition to try to make Lido Boulevard safer.
More than 1,000 people have already added their names to the petition, which is seeking to have public officials take a hard look at making improvements to Lido Boulevard to make it safer for children.
Long Beach Middle School is located off Lido Boulevard, and many students have to cross the busy, six-lane road every day to get to and from school.

Residents have long being trying to have safety improvements made to the busy road. In 2017, the Town of Hempstead officially lowered the speed limit on the road to 30 miles per hour. Still, parents are concerned about the safety of students walking and biking to school.
"The safety of our children is more important than a six lane highway running through a residential neighborhood," the petition reads. "Our children deserve a safe passageway to school."

To help improve the safety of the road, the petition writers have several suggestions for changes:
- Having crossing guards stationed at all points along Lido Boulevard where children cross.
- Make new, more visible crosswalks on the road.
- Have a stronger police presence on the road, especially near the school entrance.
- Closing lanes of the boulevard when children are going to and from school.
- Reevaluating the bus eligibility for Long Beach children, so fewer children would have to walk to school.
