Long Beach Zoning Board Signs Off On $40M Pavilion: Report

The board's approval allows South Nassau Communities Hospital to construct a $40M medical arts pavilion on old LB Medical Center property.

LONG BEACH, NY — The Long Beach zoning board of appeals has approved plans to build a $40 million medical arts pavilion on the site of the former Long Beach Medical Center, according to a report.

South Nassau Communities Hospital can now take the next step in their building plans, according to the Long Island Herald.

It's not the first time that South Nassau has appeared before the board. They were denied earlier in the month in an attempt to rezone 15,000 feet of the property on East Bay Drive from hospital use to residential, which has remained vacant since it was severely damaged during Hurricane Sandy.

South Nassau appealed that decision, and met again with the board at a special meeting July 9, according to the Herald. South Nassau presented plans to build an elevated one-story medical pavilion using money from the Federsl Emergency Management Agency.

While South Nassau officials have said the pavilion project will improve the property and give color to the neighborhood, many residents, including those who live on East State Street, are worried the medical pavilion is too close to residential homes, and will catalyze traffic and noise pollution, according to the Herald.
