My Dad, My Brother in Blue

Do you ever ride the LIRR to the city then change to the subway? Do you ever think of how it must be to patrol those subways?

I was a NYC Transit cop, so was my dad.

The Transit Police started out as a subway patrol force of privately run NYC rail companies, BMT, IND, etc. But they grew through the years to become a Brotherhood of police officers who were the few, the brave.

Relatively speaking, the NYC Transit Police were always a smaller force by a factor of ten. When there were 4,000 Transit Cops there were about 40,000 NYPD. But the Transit Police considered themselves, as do many, to be the Marines of NYC police.

The forces are now merged into one, but in early days of subway policing the Transit force was small but they were a tight Brotherhood that carries to this day.
