Nassau Firefighters Rescue Bridge Worker Who Fell Into Pit

The man fell 16 feet to the base of a pit inside one of the bridge supports, suffering serious injuries.

Firefighters rescued a man who fell off the Long Beach Bridge and was seriously injured Friday morning.

The bridge was closed this morning after authorities say the bridge worker was thought to have fallen into the water below. Members of the Island Park, Long Beach and Point Lookout-Lido fire departments arrived on the scene and tried to find him in the water. They determined that he didn't fall in the water, but had fallen down a 16-foot-deep pit to the base of the bridge, and was seriously injured.

The firefighters entered the bridge and rescued the worker, who was put into a Nassau County Police Department boat and taken to the Long Beach Emergency Department boat dock, and was then transferred to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in an ambulance.
