Oystercatchers and Jetty Patchers

Do you know what the greatest show on sand is?

It’s right here in our Long Beach back yard and the view from the “balcony” is fantastic.

Every year the oystercatchers of Long Beach provide a sand drama far beyond what we’re used to, yet so near to our boardwalk balcony…and our hearts.

And every year those who follow them closely know the perils the eggs and hatchlings face from ravaging gulls, to rampant kids.

But this year the oystercatchers face an even daunting challenge. On top of those natural concerns the reconstruction of our jetties and beach is in full gear.

Trucks rumble and roar, giant yellow cranes swing tonnage of rock. The sounds and the sights are a wildlife fright.

But the oystercatchers do have everyone from photog friends to Facebook Friends rooting for them.

They also have friends in our Long Beach government who have in the past showed concern for the propagation of the species. They’ve promised to continue in that tradition and we wildlife lovers are delighted with their cooperation and support.

Take a look at the photos and a listen to the video I put together. It’s just a glimpse at the greatest show on sand: http://tinyurl.com/Oyst-Jetty
