Scaffolding to Protect Area Around Ye Olde Firehouse

Lido-Point Lookout Fire Commissioners announce scaffolding as community considers future plans for historic firehouse.

Scaffolding will soon surround Ye Olde Firehouse as a result of an engineering study on the historic building.

Lido-Point Lookout Fire District Commissioners released a statement to the public this week:

In the coming days, residents will notice that scaffolding will be erected in front of Ye Olde Firehouse (on both the Hewlett Avenue side of the building and the Lido Boulevard side). The Commissioners approved a contract with a vendor at a special meeting of the Board on Feb. 10, based upon conditions documented in a study and report by Rabco Engineering, which concluded that “at a minimum, a protective sidewalk shed be immediately constructed along the outer exposed common corridors to protect the public.”

We don’t want you to be alarmed by the appearance of the scaffolding; however, the fact is that the exterior stucco facade of Ye Olde Firehouse has suffered extensive deterioration, particularly at the base, which in part is due to ‘the likely inundation at the lower portion due to recent flood events’ according to the Rabco report.

As your Fire Commissioners, our job is to verify that the building does not pose a hazard to the public. This scaffolding will ensure that no personal or property damage will ensue as a result of the deteriorated condition of the wall.

Obviously, the scaffolding cannot remain up forever. The challenges of Ye Olde Firehouse remain, and as a community, we must continue to discuss plans for its future with our residents. In light of the engineering report conclusions and a letter recently received from the Town of Hempstead Building Department that corroborates the Sandy damage and new requirements for any planned upgrade, we have commissioned our architects and engineers to develop long term recommendations for how to best deal with Ye Olde Firehouse.

We will continue to keep our community up to date about this issue as new information emerges.
