Seeing Red

If you drive at all you are aware of them. But do you know what's involved with red light camera violations?

We recently got a red light camera ticket. It wasn’t a fun experience.

Many of you who have received them just mailed in the tax, er, I mean fine, and got on with your lives.

But Cheryl and I did go down to the Nassau County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency to see what could be done about our case. It was informative but not very satisfying.

First, I’m a believer in the basic unfairness of the current cash-fine system, the wealthy among us can just pay the fine because the hundred fifty bucks represents, in some cases, only a few minutes of work time. But for others it’s a whole day’s pay or in some cases two day's pay.

I actually think a certain percentage of one's income, say a tenth of one percent, or whatever, is more appropriate. That way those making half a mil would suffer a commensurate pain as those making the minimum wage.

Anyway...

It was quite an experience to go down and see what the diligent tax/traffic adjudicators-in-the-interest-of safety, are up too. You might learn a thing or two without having to go down there and be surprised:
