Town of Hempstead Cooling Centers Open This Week
Residents can visit one of the 15 centers within the Town of Hempstead.

With temperatures rising, the Town of Hempstead will be opening 15 local cooling centers for this week.
The centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. until Friday, July 22.
According to the National Weather Center, Tuesday will be the hottest day with temperatures reaching up to 86 degrees. Wednesday will reach a maximum of about 81 degrees and Thursday will hit 85 degrees.

During these days, residents can visit one of the centers in the following locations:
- BALDWIN: Baldwin Senior Center, 1810 N. Grand Avenue
- BELLMORE: Bellmore Senior Center, 2000 Bellmore Avenue
- CEDARHURST: Cedarhurst Senior Center, 200 Cedarhurst Avenue (open until 4:30 p.m.)
- EAST MEADOW: East Meadow Senior Center, 1485 Front Street
- ELMONT: Elmont Senior Center, 138 Elmont Road
- FRANKLIN SQUARE: Franklin Square Senior Center, 1182 Martha Place
- VALLEY STREAM: Green Acres Senior Center, 400 Flower Road
- LEVITTOWN: Levittown Senior Center, 555 N. Newbridge Road
- MERRICK: Merrick Senior Center, 2550 Clubhouse Road
- OCEANSIDE: Oceanside Senior Center, 2900 Rockaway Avenue
- ROOSEVELT: Rosa Parks Senior Center, 2 Babylon Turnpike
- WESTBURY: Salisbury Senior Center, 460 Salisbury Park Drive
- UNIONDALE: Uniondale-Hempstead Senior Center, 840 Uniondale Avenue
- UNIONDALE: Uniondale-Merrick Senior Center, 750 Jerusalem Avenue
- WANTAGH: Wantagh Senior Center, 1150 Seamans Neck Road
In addition, Town of Hempstead officials provided the following tips to help residents beat the heat during some of the hottest days of the summer:

- Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
- Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, usually between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Consider performing these tasks in the early morning or evening hours.
- When in the sun, wear sunscreen and a hat to protect your face and head.
- Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Eat well-balanced, light and regular meals.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothes.
- Never leave children or pets in closed vehicles.
- Check on elderly family members, friends and neighbors.
- When indoors, use an air conditioner or fans to cool rooms if available.
- Cool down with repeated cool baths or showers.
- Consider going to public pools and air-conditioned stores and malls.
- Seniors and others who may be sensitive to extreme heat should contact friends, neighbors or relatives at least twice a day during a heat wave.
- Seek help if you feel symptoms of heat-related illness.
