Hempstead Town Warns Residents Of Water Bill Scam
Scammers are calling residents about overdue water bills and threatening to shut off service. Don't believe them.

The Town of Hempstead is warning residents about a scam where the homeowner is threatened with having their water disconnected unless they make bogus payments.
Though the scam has the potential to hit anyone in the town, officials say residents of the Bowling Green, East Meadow, Levittown, Lido-Point Lookout, Roosevelt Filed and Uniondale water districts should be particularly aware of the scam.
The town says that, in the scam, residents receive a call from someone posing as a representative of the town Water Department telling residents that their bills are past due. Unless an immediate payment is made over the phone or at a commercial location, the caller threatens to have the homeowner's water shut off. The town says that the scammers are using technology to make it look like the calls are originating form the Water Department.

Hempstead Town advises residents to not make payments to these individuals. The town says that the Water Department would never call a resident about an outstanding balance, and would never turn off the water to a home due to a late payment.
If any residents believe they are the victims of this scam, they are encouraged to call the Nassau County Police Department to file a report.
