The Treasurists

I came upon two men who keep earphones on as they trek the the sands of Long Beach. They’re not listening to an iPod or iPhone, no Springsteen or Bach; they would be distractions from the moment at hand.

No, they listen to their metal detectors, they fix on each square foot of shore before them, searching for a ping, a signal that something lies beneath. They move footstep by footstep, moment by moment, searching for history, searching for treasure.

You've seen them too. There they are, walking by the sea, amidst the waves and wind, blue sky, swooping gulls. It's one precious moment after another. But then a ping denotes adventure, promise, and sometimes...a very memorable moment:
