Why, Mr. Winters, are you hitting on me?

Are you always happy with your high-tech toys? For me, they're cool, like this writing venue. But then…

(Photo, Lee Winters)

I get a warm, nostalgic feeling when I see an old pay phone someplace, even if it’s only in a photo, like the one I took above, years ago. I particularly liked the free-standing phones like this, better than the booth phone—no stink.

I remember using the phone in the photo calling my sweetheart, Cheryl. I think the phone was at Edwards Blvd on the boardwalk. Now I call Cheryl from the phone in my pocket, or the Apple watch on my wrist. And therein lies the problem, you'll see.

The old days were simpler times though, less hectic, less demanding, less addictive to tech. Remember when Polaroid camera’s came out? Wow! Instant gratification. Just coat the pic with a magic, transparent layer of preservative and a memory is locked in—instantly.

Now we are—more gratified—more instantly—than ever.

I get some of that quick-sat right here, when I write and post something and then it’s—bang zoom—it’s in your room. You’re reading something that was in my mind just moments ago. Some of you might wish it stayed there.

But others might share my thoughts on the contrast of nostalgia, and current tech-times. You might fondly recall the days of pay phones or at least they’ll conjure up your younger years when you used those phones. And some of those younger years were fun, some of them—not so much.

I had some vivid contrasts recently when I considered how I live today and how I lived in those analog days.

You might compare and contrast, as you were often assigned to do in school essays, when you check out my latest essay: "Why, Mr.Winters, are you hitting on me?"
