Join us for an afternoon of short films by and/or about people with disabilities, as part of the 18th Annual ReelAbilities Film Festival: New York.
ReelAbilities Film Festival is the world’s leading film festival dedicated to advancing disability representation, accessibility, and inclusion through the power of storytelling. Each year, ReelAbilities presents a curated selection of feature films, documentaries, and shorts that challenge stereotypes, expand perspectives, and highlight authentic lived experiences. 
The screening for this specially curated selection of shorts films from this year’s 2026 Festival will be at the Great Neck Library, 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck on Monday, April 27, at 2:00 p.m.
This is a free event, but you must RSVP to secure your seat. Join us for a moderated discussion with the author of "Treasures of the Mashadi Kitchen." Learn about the most popular dishes among the Mashadi Jewish Communities, as well as tradition and heritage. In the author's own words, "My mother, grandmothers, aunts, and mother-in-law poured their souls into every dish. Each recipe here carries a bit of their spirit...Treasures of the Mashadi Kitchen is my way of sharing the warmth of our heritage with you."
The evening's conversation will be moderated by Rebecca Sassouni. Rebecca is a past Board of Education President, a current board trustee, and a member of the Mayor’s Coalition for Unity. A lawyer and writer, Rebecca serves on various boards and committees focused on education and law, including first-generation American Persian Jewish experiences. 
This author event will take place at the Great Neck Library, 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck, on Tuesday, April 28, at 7:00 p.m. Registration is required but open to all. Great Neck cardholders and residents can register online, in person, or via phone. Non-residents are welcome as walk-ins, subject to space availability. Musician, educator, and public advocate Shoshana Hershkowitz will be honored for her community service and commitment to constructive dialogue at the fifth annual banquet of Hofstra University’s <a href="https://www.hofstra.edu/cce" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Center for Civic Engagement (CCE)</a>
The event will be held Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Hofstra University Club.
Hershkowitz, a resident of Setauket, Long Island, will receive the Michael D’Innocenzo Award for Outstanding Contribution to Constructive Public Dialogue, an honor established in 2023 to recognize individuals who advance principled conversation and civic engagement. 
The award celebrates the legacy of the late <a href="https://news.hofstra.edu/2021/11/19/remembering-michael-dinnocenzo/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Dr. Michael D’Innocenzo</a>, Hofstra’s longest-serving faculty member and a co-founder of CCE. A scholar deeply committed to civic responsibility, D’Innocenzo also co-founded the Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives and was the inaugural recipient of the University’s Harry H. Wachtel Distinguished Teaching Professor for the Study of Nonviolent Social Change and the recipient of a Hofstra University Presidential Medal.
Hershkowitz’s career reflects a longstanding dedication to education, advocacy, and community engagement. 
A music educator for more than 25 years, Hershkowitz has served as an artist-in-residence at Stony Brook University since 2009, where she conducts choral ensembles and teaches first-year experience courses for incoming students. 
Beyond academia, she works at the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy, where she manages the Empire State Campaign for Child Care, a statewide coalition advocating for universal childcare in New York. Hershkowitz is also the founder of Suffolk Progressives, a grassroots organization dedicated to advancing progressive public policy at the local, state, and national levels.
Through her leadership and advocacy, Hershkowitz has helped create spaces where diverse perspectives can be heard and respected – an approach that aligns closely with the mission of CCE. 
Since its founding in 2007, CCE has emphasized conflict resolution, social transformation, community building, and leadership development. Each academic year, the Center presents conferences, debates, workshops, exhibitions, cultural gatherings, and performances exploring themes such as nonviolence, social justice and sustainability, the democratic process, and globalization.
Under the leadership of Dr. Philip Dalton, associate professor in the <a href="https://www.hofstra.edu/writing-studies-rhetoric/ba-rhetoric-public-advocacy.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Rhetoric and Public Advocacy Program</a>, students participate in CCE as volunteers, interns, and fellows. Fellows – the highest tier of involvement – commit to weekly service with community partners such as the Greater Uniondale Area Action Coalition (GUAAC) and the Uniondale Community Land Trust, working to facilitate positive, transformative change on Long Island.
The CCE banquet will bring together students, faculty, community leaders, and supporters to celebrate the Center’s ongoing efforts to strengthen civic literacy and democratic engagement.

Hofstra’s Center for Civic Engagement to Honor Public Advocate Shoshana Hershkowitz

Come and see the exhibition of striking masterpieces of sculptures by Dr. Suzanne Posner from May 1 to July 31 at the Great Neck Library at 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck. The sculptures are located at the bookshelves in the Main Library's Reference Study Area. Be sure to join us for an art reception on June 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Main Library's Front Lobby. "Making art is joyful. An artist makes art out of the materials available. The nature of the materials influences or even elicits the creation. I enjoy seeing the materials from which the art originates; the stone, the paint, the paper, the wire. I am a direct carver, often starting a piece without knowing what the subject will be or changing the subject after starting. If a piece of stone breaks off unintentionally or a painting subject move, the artwork may need to change midway. I try to take the unexpected as an exciting challenge and continue the work with grace. I hope to bring joy to viewers with beautiful shapes and brilliant color." Dr. Suzanne Posner is an award-winning sculptor and painter. She has been sculpting in stone for 30 years and currently teaches stone sculpture at Cumberland School in Great Neck, NY. Posner’s work can be found in private art collections throughout the United States and has been seen in numerous group and solo shows. She is a member of The Art Students League of New York and The National Art League. Suzanne grew up creating clay creatures and unique jewelry and acting in school musicals. She has visited over 50 countries. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a B.A. in Philosophy and from the University of North Carolina with a D.D.S. While she practiced dentistry in NYC, she studied sculpture and painting at The Art Students League and The New School. She moved back to her hometown of Great Neck and started sculpting in stone as she raised 2 creative and responsible sons with her beloved husband, Alan Katz. In 2011, Suzanne was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, and she retired from dentistry to sculpt and paint and teach stone carving.

The Great Neck Library is hosting an art exhibition during the month of May 2026 at its Main Library Lower-Level Art Gallery at 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck. This exhibition features artwork by students from the North Shore Hebrew Academy. Join us for an art reception on Monday, May 4, at 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. “Creative Connections” showcases the artistic voices of students in grades 1–8 at North Shore Hebrew Academy. Rooted in a well-rounded fine arts program led by Mrs. Jill Cole and Mrs. Gwynne Stein, this exhibit reflects students’ exploration of a wide range of artists, styles and medium. Through their work, students express personal connections to Judaism and to the world around them. Pieces in the exhibit are inspired by artist studies, Jewish holidays, and both Judaic and general studies curricula, highlighting how creativity can bridge learning across disciplines. At NSHA, the art program is designed to engage students in meaningful experiences that connect heritage, culture, and personal expression. “Creative Connections” invites the Great Neck community and beyond to experience how art serves as a powerful tool for understanding identity, strengthening values, and bringing our mission to life—encouraging students to see themselves as active participants in both the Jewish and global community.
