May 31, 2026 8:30AM FREE 1/4 Mile Toddlers Run (4 and under) Starts at the tennis courts. All toddlers will receive a medal. 9:00AM Start - Rain or Shine 3232 Grand Ave Baldwin, NY 11510 WE ARE MUCH MOTE THAN JUST A RACE... more like a Renaissance tale of science, art, global travel, philanthropy and a beautiful wife trying to make the world a better place. The t-shirt was painted by my grandmother's brother Dr. Morton Berson. He married Miss Kentucky, Sarah Evelyn Cooper Berson, also an artist. Dr. Berson was a pioneer in plastic surgery and wrote the book, Atlas on Plastic Surgery. He traveled all over the world giving lectures on plastic surgery. During and after World War ll and/or the Greek Civil War, he restored the faces of Greek children who were oftentimes left unrecognizable from the atrocities of the war. He was decorated by the King of Greece for restoring the faces of Greek children. After the war, the King of Greece said what can I do with these children whose faces are still damaged. Dr. Berson said send them to America 6 at a time and I will take care of them. Medical news reports from the early 1950s state that the Greek Consul General in New York presented decorations and diplomas of honor to Dr. Berson. Dr. Morton was Director of the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Downtown Hospital and the Pan-American Clinic in New York, both hospitals were major treatment centers in mid-20th century New York. Dr. Berson was married to Miss Kentucky, Sarah Evelyn Cooper Berson, also an artist. I recall seeing Dr. Berson's paintings when he hosted all the cousins for summer weekends in Fishkill, NY. Sadly there are few records of Dr. Berson as an artist, we will continue to research more of what I saw firsthand and the certificate below that he exhibited his painting in San Francisco in 1972 at the American Physicians Art Association. worthpoint.com/worthopedia/york-medical-dr-morton-berson-mid-4661271559 My grandmother gave the painting to my mother, 99, and she still goes on a treadmill a few days a week. My mother's mind is still very sharp but I cannot recall if it was my mother or grandmother who told me the painting was painted in Piraeus, Greece. We hope to get volunteers who can scour through Greek newspaper archives in Greece and New York to find articles, or contact American College of Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgeons or other medical organizations
