Hofstra University Continuing Education is introducing a five-week course on the practical uses of artificial intelligence in professional settings.
The focus of AI for Working Professionals is on practical applications rather than technical development. Participants will explore how AI can support writing, research, data analysis, communication, and project management. They will also learn how to use it responsibly and assess its results.
Taught by Mitch Kase, EdD, executive director of Hofstra University’s Center for Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Assessment, AI for Working Professionals meets live via Zoom on Thursdays, October 22 through November 19, from 6-7:30 p.m..
The course is part of Continuing Education’s broader series, Workplace Excellence: Essential Skills for Working Professionals, designed to help community members build or refresh practical workplace skills. The series is intended for people who are currently employed, as well as those changing careers or preparing to reenter the workforce.
Weekly sessions move from an introduction to AI and effective prompts to applications in writing, research, spreadsheets, presentations, and workflow automation. Activities include revising a professional document, creating a memo with data visualizations, and drafting an AI use policy for a team or organization.
Professional judgment is a central part of the curriculum. Participants will practice checking claims and sources, identifying bias, and considering whether AI-generated content is appropriate for its intended audience. Discussions will also address copyright, organizational policies, and the role of AI in supporting decisions.
The final session brings those lessons together through applied projects and individual plans for incorporating AI into participants’ work. By the end of the course, participants will have a personalized collection of AI tools and a portfolio of projects. Course platforms offer free tiers or trial access.
Tuition is $195 for the course. For more information, visit Hofstra’s AI for Working Professionals course page.
