Library Telescope Program
Library patrons can borrow a telescope from a participating library & use it on their own to view the Moon, planets & even deep sky objects.

A Library Telescope is a telescope owned by a library that can be borrowed just like a book. Usually it’s a modified Orion 4.5” StarBlast Reflector Telescope.
Hundreds of libraries across the United States have Library Telescope Programs that have been remarkably successful. A library can get a telescope program going for under $400. This includes the telescope, a zoom eyepiece and helpful accessories like a beginner’s astronomy book, a Moon map and a planisphere. The telescope is modified in various ways so it is less likely to be damaged and parts are less likely to be lost.
Library patrons can be taught how to handle and use the Library Telescope with just a few minutes of instruction. Kids and adults can quickly learn how to point the telescope at the Moon or a planet on their own. Not only will this amaze the viewer but it can instill confidence as well.

I am an amateur astronomer and have worked with 8 Nassau County libraries to start Library Telescope Programs. The library purchases the telescope and accessories directly from vendors. I assist in modifying the telescope and teaching staff and patrons how to handle and use the telescope.
My help is completely free. I do this to promote astronomy and what better way to bring astronomy to the public, than to give them access to a quality telescope?
