Men Shoot Hoops for Pink Aid

Breast cancer touches entire families, not just the patient. That’s why on Wednesday, May 30th, on a perfect warm spring evening more than thirty men came together at Cold Spring Harbor High School to support the women in their lives. Men of all ages from across Long Island participated in Pink Aid’s Second Annual Men Shoot for Pink. With four teams playing simultaneously, the basketball courts were filled with sweat, energy, camaraderie and love.

The event was organized for the second year by Chris Mitchell of Mitchells Huntington and led by team captains Adam Wolf, Michael Finnegan, Kyle Mostransky and NBA All-Star Wally Szczerbiak. The men showed some very impressive moves on the court with serious warm ups needed for a lively game. All were there for a good time, fun and sport, but the ladies in their lives were the focus. Some of the men have been touched by the disease, while others just want to be part of saving more lives. No matter what brought them together for the evening, their efforts and the generosity of the event sponsors raised $7300 which will help more women in need across Long Island. After the game many of the guys went to Old Field BBQ in Huntington for some well needed refreshments hosted by owners, Dave Tunney and Rory Van Nostrand.

When Chris Mitchell was asked why he is involved he said, “I started this event to get men who have supported their wives, sisters, mothers and friends when they have battled the disease. When there is a diagnosis in the family everyone gets involved in the healing so I thought it would be great to get the guys involved in raising funds to support women across Long Island. Beyond having a fun night, knowing we have come together to help other families is a wonderful feeling!”

Thanks to all of the great gents that put their sweat forward to support Pink Aid. A special thank you to the event sponsors: Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International, Unique Health and Fitness, Organic KRUSH, Gellerman Orthodontics and Mostransky & Associates LLC.

This fall on October 17th, the Pink Aid runway will light up for the 5th annual fashion show with designer Vince and his glam models. To date this local grassroots gang of gals has distributed just over $1 million in the first four years. And the ladies, and their guys, are geared up to make 2018 even more successful. Success at Pink Aid is measured in lives supported at what is a very frightening and disruptive time in a family’s life.

Pink Aid helps underserved Long Island women survive breast cancer treatment with support and dignity. Offering grants to support programs that provide services including free breast cancer screenings plus funds to help cover non-medical expenses such as food cards, household bills, wigs, recovery garments and transportation for patients undergoing treatment. By providing screenings to women in financial need the hope is to detect the disease at its earliest stage. Some of the programs Pink Aid supports are established hospital foundations and national non-profits, while others are smaller grass roots organizations.

If you would like to get involved or have an idea for a fundraiser to help, reach out to Pink Aid. From lemonade stands, to Pop-Up Pink Parties, shooting hoops and Sweat for Pink activities, people on Long Island are getting together to save lives. Every penny counts and helping other’s is the best medicine. Empowering breast cancer survivors to heal by helping and inspiring others makes Pink Aid very special and why we say, “Compassion until there’s a cure”. www.pinkaid.org.
