Propel NY Energy Hosts ‘Community Office Hours’ Series Across Long Island

As part of a continued commitment to be ‘early, often and inclusive’ with community outreach efforts, Propel NY recently hosted a series of “Community Office Hours”, a set of informal events across Long Island where project team members met with dozens of residents and local businesses could learn more about the transmission project, ask questions and share feedback. These events are part of a series of varied outreach approaches to emphasize accessibility and customized engagement that meets people where they are and hear directly from local areas of interest.

Propel NY Energy, a collaboration between New York Power Authority (NYPA) and New York Transco, is a 90-mile underground and submarine electric transmission project designed to strengthen the reliability, resiliency, and capacity of New York’s electric grid through system improvements across parts of Long Island, Queens, the Bronx, and Westchester County.

For the past month, Propel NY representatives, covering team members from engineering construction management, community engagement, and environmental stewardship, met with community members at locations along the proposed route:

• Rockville Centre American Legion Hall
• Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library
• Manhasset Public Library
• Uniondale Public Library
• Oceanside Library
• Shelter Rock Public Library
• Farmingdale Public Library
• Hempstead Public Library
• Glen Head Community Center

“Being a good neighbor means showing up, having dialogue with the community and finding ways to work together,” said Susan Craig, Director of Communications for the New York Power Authority. “That is our long-term goal of this team and the focus for the project.”

Over the past two years, the Propel NY Energy project has prioritized reaching out to communities along the route to provide information, solicit feedback, and answer questions about what communities can expect in the coming years as construction is expected to begin in 2026.

The Community Office Hours series builds on Propel’s broader outreach efforts, which have included quarterly webinars, in-person community information sessions, and open houses. “Thank you to the Long Island neighbors that met with us and engaged in productive information sharing,” said Shannon Baxevanis, Director of Public Affairs for New York Transco. “We want to ensure that all feedback is taken into account prior to construction, and there is no better way to do that than being in the communities.”
