Surge Rehabilitation and Nursing Becomes the First Facility in the Nation to Achieve ACP Certification in Cardiopulmonary Rehab

Surge Rehabilitation and Nursing in Middle Island, NY, announced today that it is the first facility in the nation to become Accelerated Care Plus (ACP) Certified in Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Fall Prevention. This is a groundbreaking achievement and a distinction that underscores Surge’s commitment to clinical excellence and innovation in post-acute care. This accomplishment elevates the facility’s position as a leader in rehabilitative healthcare. 12 Nurses, Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists from Surge become first in the nation to receive ACP Certification in Cardiopulmonary Rehab and Fall Prevention.
These prestigious certifications, awarded by Accelerated Care Plus, represent a commitment to rigorous standards of clinical practice, patient outcomes, and ongoing staff development. To earn the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Certification, Surge staff demonstrated excellence in specialized therapy interventions, clinical protocols, and the integration of advanced technology to support cardiopulmonary recovery and long-term management. Surge’s team underwent extensive training, implemented evidence-based practices, and achieved measurable improvements in patient respiratory and cardiac outcomes.
“Being the first in the nation to receive this recognition reflects our unwavering dedication to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in skilled nursing care,” said Ahmed Joudah, Administrator of Surge Rehabilitation and Nursing. “This certification is a milestone and affirmation of a promise to our residents and families that we deliver the highest level of cardiopulmonary care available today.”

In tandem, the ACP Fall Prevention Certification highlights Surge’s proactive approach to one of the most common risks among older adults.
According to the CDC website statistics one out of 10 falls results in an injury that causes older adults to restrict their activities for a day or more or to seek attention from the healthcare system. Each year, there are about 3 million emergency department visits and about 1 million hospitalizations among older adults due to falls. In 2019, 83% of hip fractures deaths and 88% of emergency department visits and hospitalizations for hip fractures were caused by falls. Falls are also the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries.

Fall interventions delivered by U.S. healthcare providers have the potential to prevent thousands of falls among older adults, thereby improving their health and wellbeing. An interdisciplinary approach is a key aspect of person-centered care to optimize clinical outcomes.
As part of this initiative, Surge has introduced several evidence-based enhancements:
- Certified Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapists trained through the American Institute of Balance (AIB-VR), now on staff, offering targeted treatment for dizziness, vertigo, and balance disorders.
- Community-Based Otago Balance Program, offered free to local residents, promotes strength and balance in older adults and helps prevent falls before they happen.
- Surge therapists have become certified in the Otago Exercise Program through a grant partnership with Stony Brook University Hospital, ensuring consistent delivery of this proven fall prevention methodology.
- Surge Offers Better Breathers Club Support Group in collaboration with the American Lung Association every third Wednesday of the month at 1pm, offering needed support and education to people in the community and their loved ones dealing with lung disease.
“These certifications represent a strategic investment in the health and safety of our residents and community,” said Robert Madigan PT, AIB- VR, Cardiopulmonary Program Director. “From advanced cardiopulmonary rehabilitation to comprehensive fall prevention, we are building a culture of safety, recovery, and quality outcomes.”
As an ACP Certified facility, Surge continues to lead by example in clinical excellence, team education, and community involvement. These achievements reinforce its mission: to provide individualized, compassionate care that helps every resident thrive. For more information, visit www.surgerehab.com.
