Arrest Made in Shooting Death of 12-Year-Old Long Island Girl

Dejah Joyner was struck by a stray bullet in the living room of her home in October. Arrest made Sunday morning, police say.

HEMPSTEAD, NY - Police say they have caught the man who fired the stray bullet that killed 12-year-old Dejah Joyner in the living room of her Hempstead home in October.

Jakwan Keller, 20, was arrested at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. Keller, of Hempstead, was located driving a 2013 BMW at the corner of Laurel and Linden avenues with the assistance of detectives from the Nassau County Electronics Squad and members of the Hempstead Village Police Department, police said.

Joyner was in the living room of her home at 204 Dartmouth Street when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet at 4:50 p.m. on Oct. 16. She died a day later.

Neighbors told PIX 11 that a group of young men were shooting at one another in the street before Joyner was hit.

Keller is charged with second degree murder, first degree criminal use of a firearm and second degree criminal possession of a weapon. He will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
