  1. Bombs, Ball Fields and Tax Breaks: The West Hempstead Board of Education held its monthly business meeting Tuesday night, during which they answered questions from concerned parents about the recent bomb threat in the l and revisited some policies that they had voted on in December. During last month's meeting, the board elicited some strong reactions from the public in attendance when they approved the use of district facilities for a sports team that included West Hempstead residents but wasn't affiliated directly with the community and voted down a proposal to give tax breaks to volunteer firefighters for the full story about last month's meeting and check Patch later today to get the recap of Tuesday's meeting.
  2. Hometown Hero Motivates Young Athletes: Many local students spent Monday honoring the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. at the 20th Annual Friendship Games, a special track meet hosted by the Malverne School District and the Lakeview Youth Federation. Among those in attendance, was 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist and graduate Derrick Adkins, who handed out trophies, shook hands with the young runners and gave an interview to Patch.   3. Malverne Lacrosse Registration: Sign up for Malverne Lacrosse takes place today at . Register your child today, Jan. 19 or tomorrow, Jan. 20 between 7pm and 9pm.
  4. Test Your Knowledge of Malverne & W. Hempstead: Think you know Malverne and West Hempstead? Test your knowledge of your surroundings in the latest photo hunt contest starting at noon today. Tell us exactly where in the community the photo was taken to enter to win a prize. (Winner will be announced next Wednesday.)
  5. Read to Rover: Tail Waggin' Tutors returns to the today at 4p.m. The program encourages children in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade to read aloud by pairing them up dogs.
