BELLMORE

Kennedy 

Girls Soccer: Kennedy rebounded from a loss to Calhoun last Friday to defeat Herricks at home on Monday, 3-0. Nicole Liotta made seven saves to post her 10th shutout of the season. Every win for the Lady Cougars this season has come by way of a shutout, as the win moves them to 10-2-3. Danielle Gilman, Kerri Baum and Melissa Coluccio. Kennedy will likely make the playoffs as either a number two or three seed out of Conference AA-II.

Girls Volleyball: Kennedy swept aside Roslyn at home on Monday: 25-11, 25-16 and 25-23. Senior captain Heather Hulkower led the offense with a team-high 12 kills and Geanna Bruno stepped up as well with 25 assists. Sophomore Lauren Sustad added five kills in the effort that helped the Lady Cougars move to 10-5 on the season. Kennedy will make the playoffs most likely as a middle-seeded team in Class A.

Mepham

Girls Soccer: Mepham dropped a tough home game to MacArthur on Monday by a 2-1 score. The Lady Pirates remained tied at 1-1 for much for the second half after Emily Schmitt scored the teams lone goal in the first half. MacArthur found the back of the net with just 16 minutes to go, one of few that got past goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo, who had 10 saves. Mepham has one game remaining, against Long Beach on Wednesday, to determine its playoff fate.

EAST MEADOW

Clarke

Boys Soccer: Clarke struggled against Island Trees on Monday, losing a 4-0 game on the road. With three goals given up in the first half, the Rams were playing from behind for most of this game. Matthew Schwartz stopped six of the 10 shots on the day as Clarke finishes the season at 5-8-0, likely short of a playoff berth this fall.

Field Hockey: Clarke has experienced some difficulties in the later part of the season, dropping its third straight game on Monday after a 2-1 loss to visiting Cold Spring Harbor. Emma Foster kept the Lady Rams in the game with her 12th goal of the season in the first half, but a scoreless second half dropped the team to an 8-3-3 overall record in Conference I. Clarke will play at Floral Park on Tuesday to wrap up its regular season schedule.

East Meadow

Boys Soccer: East Meadow dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Plainview JFK on Monday afternoon. The Jets fell behind by two within the first 11 minutes of the game, but a second half goal by Peppe Mazzella cut the lead in half. In the end, its was not enough for East Meadow, which drops to 5-7-2 on the season. They have just one game remaining, at MacArthur on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., to make the playoff out of Conference AA-II.

Girls Soccer: East Meadow likely played its final game of the season on Monday, but if so, they ended it in dramatic fashion. Down 1-0 at the half to Hicksville, Isabella Fuduli scored the tying goal followed by the game-winner from Meghan Cleary with under five minutes remaining to win 2-1. Madison Young made eight saves in the effort as the Lady Jets finish in Conference AA-I with a 3-11-1 record.

Field Hockey: East Meadow has won its second game in a row following a 2-1 win over visiting Great Neck South on Monday. After the Lady Rebels scored a goal in the first half, it set the stage for another Lady Jets comeback. First, Lexus Turrisi scored a tying goal, and then Gianna Bova put in the second with 10 minutes remaining to come out with the win. Bova scored the game-winning goal in their win against Sewanhaka on Oct. 20. East Meadow finished at 5-7-1 in Conference II this season. 

Girls Tennis: East Meadow won its first round playoff match against visiting Oyster Bay by a slim 4-3 score. Danielle Bobetsky and Melissa Gross won the decisive match at the fourth doubles spot: 6-7, 6-5 and 6-4. East Meadow is now 10-3 overall on the season and will meet Baldwin on Tuesday for a match set to start at 3:15 p.m.

FIVE TOWNS

Hewlett

Boys Soccer: Hewlett dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Bethpage on Monday afternoon behind two first half goals from the Golden Eagles. Despite the loss, Josh Alovis, who made six saves, and the defense played with a solid effort. The Bulldogs have already clinched a playoff spot out of Conference V with an 8-3-2 overall record and will play first place Division on Tuesday in the regular season finale.

Lawrence

Girls Volleyball: Lawrence topped Westbury on the road on Monday in four sets: 25-12, 25-23, 21-25 and 25-15. Natalie Leger was the key option in the win with 15 kills to go with six aces in the serving game. Michelle Vainblat and Alexis Quiroz also made key plays in a win that moves the Golden Tornadoes to 11-4 in Conference A-III. Lawrence will play a road match at Mepham on Wednesday afternoon. 

GARDEN CITY

Girls Soccer: Garden City collected a win at home against New Hyde Park on Monday afternoon by a 2-1 final. Both of the Lady Trojans’ goals were scored in the first half, with the first one coming in the opening five minutes Courtney Studdert followed by another from Paulette Mohacsi. The defense took over from there, limiting chances and helping the team improve to 7-2-5, good enough for a playoff spot out of Conference A-I.

Girls Volleyball: Garden City went the distance with South Side at home on Monday, losing in five sets. The Lady Trojans came back to tie the set count twice before falling in the fifth set, 25-23. The team was just coming off of a five set win on the road against Herricks on Oct. 21. Emily LaCourte and Kristen Steinhardt led a courageous effort for Garden City, which is 6-9 in Conference A-I.

LEVITTOWN

Boys Volleyball: Levittown District won a road match at Valley Stream Central on Monday afternoon: 25-20, 25-17, 20-25 and 25-20. The win moves the team to 8-3 in Conference BC-I, behind Hicksville and Carey in the standings. Frank Zeigler contributed on offense with 15 kills to match the 15 kills by Anthony Costales on the day. Setter Chris Pappas played a solid game as well in the winning effort.

Division

Girls Soccer: Division did it once again in 2011, winning its fourth straight conference title after a 1-1 tie against visiting South Side. Krista Fitzpatrick scored the Blue Dragons’ lone goal in the first half, but despite a tying goal late in the next half from the Lady Cyclones, it result was enough for the title. Division concludes its regular season at 11-0-3 and will head into the playoff as a likely favorite to contend for a County championship.

Island Trees

Boys Soccer: Island Trees shut out Clarke at home on Monday by a 4-0 score. Mike Gronenthal was the top player of the game with a hat trick. Dylan Cranmer added the fourth goal and J.T. Famularo assisted on two of the scores in the win. Andrew Barnine stopped four shots for the Bulldogs, who close out at 9-1-2 and should receive a high seed come playoff time.

MacArthur

Girls Soccer: MacArthur defeated Mepham on the road by a 2-1 final on Monday afternoon to remain atop Conference AA-I. With the score tied at 1-1 at the half, the Lady Generals turned up the offensive pressure, and it finally paid off with a goal by Kelly McQuail in the 65th minute. Arianna Montefusco scored the first goal for her team. Jenna Cozza needed to make just two saves as the defense displayed a strong effort. With a 12-2-0 record, MacArthur will likely enter the AA playoffs as a one or two seed. 

LONG BEACH

Boys Volleyball: Long Beach defeated visiting East Meadow on Monday in straight sets: 25-16, 25-13 and 25-13. Bret O’Neil led the defense with 10 digs and added four aces in the serving game. Jesse Kahan helped bolster the defense as well with six blocks at the net. Long Beach has won three of its last four games to advance to 9-6 in Conference I this season.

Girls Volleyball: Long Beach dropped a Monday match-up with undefeated Wantagh on Monday in straight sets. Katherine Meyers, Emma Cohen and Dakota O’Neill led a solid effort by the Lady Marines, who finish the season at 3-11 in Conference A-I, arguably the toughest conference in Nassau County.

LYNBROOK

Girls Soccer: Lynbrook avenged a 5-0 drubbing in its season opener against Jericho with a 1-1 tie on Monday at home. Patricia Loonie scored in the first half for the Lady Owls, who led for much of the game, but Jericho came back to tie it in the 70th minute. Loonie has scored four goals in the last three games. Michelle Cantanno stopped a season-high 15 shots in the effort to help Lynbrook move to 6-2-4 in Conference A-III.

Girls Volleyball: Lynbrook avenged its first loss of the season with a three set win at New Hyde Park on Monday: 25-20, 25-13 and 25-19. Kasey Keller led the way with 12 kills and Sydney Sullivan added 10 kills on offense. Keller added contributed with seven blocks on defense. Nicolette Franco mastered the serving game with 10 aces along with eight kills on offense for the Lady Owls, who move to 14-1. They will host Great Neck South on Wednesday.

MALVERNE

Girls Soccer: Malverne/East Rockaway will host Glen Cove on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. as they battle for a playoff spot.

Girls Volleyball: Malverne will play a road match at Locust Valley on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.

MERRICK

Junior Varsity Football: The Colts played traditional powerhouse Garden City in an Oct. 17 home game and surrendered only a 1st quarter 15-yard TD run in dropping a tough 7-0 decision to the Trojans.  Jake Stein was a standout on the defensive side from his cornerback position and tough running by Thomas Fitzsimmons and three receptions by Thomas Buckley were almost enough to move the Colts into position for a tying score late in the contest, but a 4th down pass play from the Garden City 24-yard line in the final minute was unsuccessful.  Calhoun moved to 4-3 by then trouncing the Great Neck South JV squad 49-20 in an Oct. 22nd road game.  The JV season concludes with an Oct. 29th road game against Carey as the Colts attempt to complete their turnaround from last year's 2 - 6 mark by finishing with a winning record.

Boys Soccer: Calhoun edged out Port Washington at home on Monday afternoon by a 1-0 score to clinch a playoff spot in Conference AA-II. Harry Davis has come on strong in the later part of the season for the Colts, as he scored the lone goal on the day in the first half. Angelo DiMatteo, Justin Bergman and Vito Cassisi displayed strong play in the field as well. Matt Donnelly made eight saves in his third shutout of the season for Calhoun.

Girls Volleyball: Calhoun was swept on the road by Great Neck South for its second loss in a row. Prior to the two-game stretch, the Lady Colts had won three games in a row. Lauren Streznec and Valerie Munsoen displayed solid effort on the day for Calhoun, which is now 8-5 in Conference A-II. They will play at Hewlett on Wednesday afternoon.

MINEOLA

Boys Soccer: Mineola has looked dominant over the last few games, winning three straight by a combined 9-0 score including a 3-0 win against Valley Stream North on Monday. Paul Sandoval scored twice and midfielder Christian Lird added another in the win. Kevin Mulder needed to make just two saves in the effort as he was backed by a strong defense led by Daniel Muller and Richie Forte. Mineola finishes the regular season with an 11-2-1 record and is expected to receive a high seed in the upcoming playoffs.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE

Girls Soccer: South Side tied new conference champion Division on Monday by a 1-1 final. The Lady Cyclones finished in second place in the regular season with an 8-2-3 record. Christina Klaum scored the tying goal for her team and Kelsey Berki stopped seven shots in the effort. The matchup on Monday may be a semi finals or finals preview as the playoffs are set to begin this weekend.

Girls Volleyball: South Side defeated Garden City on the road in five thrilling sets on Monday. The Lady Cyclones and Lady Trojans traded sets until the road team from the decisive set, 25-23. Kayla Principato led the offense with 17 big kills, followed by Allison Glass with 12 kills. Grace Healey got it done on both sides with eight kills and seven blocks on defense. South Side moves to 14-3 in Conference A-I and should receive a high seed come playoff time.

SEAFORD

Boys Soccer: Seaford won its second game in a row following a 1-0 win against visiting Roosevelt on Monday. Jimmy Roell, more known for his gritty defensive play for the Vikings, scored his first goal of the season midway through the first half. Brian Graziose made seven saves in the big shutout as Seaford advances to wrap up its regular season at 5-5-3.

WANTAGH

Girls Soccer: Wantagh has been one of the best teams late in the season, winning its third games in the last five days. The Warriors defeated Bethpage on the road on Monday by a 1-0 score behind a first half goal from eighth grader Kaitlyn Cerasi five minutes before the halftime whistle. Another eighth grader on the team, Francesca Venezia, assisted on the goal. Senior goalkeeper Brenna Smith made seven saves in her second straight shutout. Wantagh concludes the regular season with an 8-2-3 record and will likely make the playoffs as a lower seed in Class A.

Girls Volleyball: Wantagh made its seniors proud on “Senior Night” in a sweep of Long Beach: 25-8, 27-25 and 25-17. Several seniors played a large part in the win, as they have all year long. Lauren Pennino led the offense with 14 kills, many of which came from lead setter Carly Simeone with 32 assists on the day. Jenny Ilibassi helped out the offense with 10 kills and aided the defense with 12 digs, along with nine blocks at the net from Pennino. Gerri Schelto tacked on 22 digs on defense as well to help Wantagh remain undefeated at 14-0 with the playoffs ahead.

Girls Swimming: In a close meet that came down to the final event, the girls swim team defeated Farmingdale last Friday, Oct. 14, to improve their record to 7-0 in the conference. The relay of Shannon Gordon, Kelli Schmidt, Jasmine Chu and Kristina Goehringer, won the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 4:03 to solidify the victory. Freshman Victoria Zozzaro, encouraged by her Warrior chanting teammates, took first and set a new school diving record with a score of 239.55. The girls take on Cold Spring Harbor this Friday, just one meet away from the Conference title.

WEST HEMPSTEAD

Boys Soccer: West Hempstead will play Manhasset on the road at 4:30 p.m. in its final league match of the season.

Girls Soccer: West Hempstead will play at Island Trees in a night game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in its final league match of the season.

Boys Volleyball: West Hempstead will host Jericho on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in a league match-up.

Girls Volleyball: West Hempstead will travel on the road to Wheatley High School for a match at 6 p.m. tomorrow evening.
