BELLMORE

Kennedy

Girls Soccer: The Lady Cougars have been one of the best teams as of late in Conference AA-II, improving their undefeated streak to seven games and record to 6-1-1 overall after a dominating 6-0 win at Valley Stream Central. Meredith Jones and Melissa Esposito each scored twice and Marley Gerber had a team-high three points with a goal and two assists.

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Cougars took a step backward after falling in straight sets to visiting South Side on Wednesday. Currently at 5-4, Heather Hulkover, Jamie Demmett and the rest of the Lady Cougars have crucial games against Herricks and Garden City next week in order to stay in the hunt for a conference title.

Boys Badminton: Great Neck South edged out Kennedy in a match at home by a 4-3 score on Wednesday to drop its record to 3-3. The Cougars figure to remain in contention with the like of the Rebels, as well as Long Beach and Jericho.

Mepham

Girls Soccer: Mepham avenged a 2-0 loss to Baldwin in September with a 4-1 win on Wednesday. The Simpson sisters, Kelsey and Toni, each scored a goal, along with Ashley Appel. Eighth-grader Erin Gilroy tallied four total points with a goal of her own and three assists to help the Lady Pirates move to a 3-3-3 record in Conference AA-I.

Boys Badminton: Mepham fell below .500 on the season with a 6-1 loss at home to Long Beach, but still remain a contender for the conference title. The Pirates defeated Calhoun at home last week by a 4-3 score.

EAST MEADOW

Clarke

Boys Soccer: Clarke won in an impressive offensive display against Plainedge on Wednesday, winning by a 6-1 score in a non-league matchup. Efrain Cruz scored three times to up his season total to four goals for the Rams. Anthony Zaino collected a season-high three points with a goal and two assists in the win that moves Clarke to 2-5-0 overall this season.

Girls Soccer: Clarke continued its undefeated season at 7-0-2 with a 2-0 defeat of Floral Park on the road. Hope Quinonez provided the offensive output with both goals as Emily Ramos and the Lady Rams have not allowed a goal in the last three games, outscoring opponents 11-0 during the stretch.

Field Hockey: Clarke battled its neighbors in East Meadow on Wednesday, with the Lady Rams coming out on top by a 1-0 score. Jessica Gibaldi scored in the nick of time late in the second half to give her team the crucial win to move to 5-0-3. Clarke and Garden City are the only Conference I teams without a loss this season.

East Meadow

Girls Soccer: East Meadow has had some very close calls in the last week, losing three consecutive games by just a single goal. The team's latest defeat came on the road against Oceanside, as the Lady Sailors scored the game's lone goal in the first few minutes of the second half. Goalkeeper Nicole Castro stopped nine shots in the effort as the Jets fall to 1-8-0 on the season.

Field Hockey: East Meadow fell in a close match to Clarke by a 1-0 score on Wednesday. Despite another strong effort from goalkeeper Kelly Ann Callahan -- 13 saves -- a tough Clarke defensive unit limited chances for the Lady Jets to put one in. East Meadow falls to 2-4-1 overall in Conference II, but remain very much alive for a playoff opportunity.

FIVE TOWNS

Hewlett

Boys Soccer: The Bulldogs are now undefeated in their last six games this season after a 3-2 win at Glen Cove. Hewlett led early with a 2-0 lead at the half, but after the Big Red stormed back to tie at two, before Kelvin Larius scored the second of his pair of goals in the 65th minute. Luis Campos also had a goal to help the team advance to 6-2-1 in Conference V this season.

Girls Swimming: The Lady Bulldogs defeated visiting South Side in a head-to-head meet by a final score of 57-45. The big story here is Val Elefante breaking a previous school record in the 100 breast stroke event with an exceptional time of 1:15:51.

Lawrence

Boys Soccer: Lawrence had a two-game winning streak snapped with a tough loss at home to Division. The Golden Tornadoes played tough, but gave up the go-ahead goal to drop a 1-0 decision. Kevin Cancinos saved a season-high seven shots, but his team falls to 3-5-1 this season.

Girls Volleyball: Lawrence has found itself in a number of five-set matches this season, but came up on the short end Wednesday at Jericho after dropping the fifth and deciding set, 25-20. The Golden Tornadoes led 20-15, but gave up the late lead to fall for the first time this season at 8-1 under first-year head coach David Mayerson, who is also a Lawrence graduate.

GARDEN CITY

Boys Soccer: The Trojans boys soccer team scored early at home against South Side, but a quick answer by the Cyclones resulted in an eventual 1-1 final on Wednesday afternoon. Jack Metzler scored the lone goal for Garden City, which is undefeated in its last five games and 6-1-2 overall this season.

Girls Soccer: Garden City won in convincing fashion at home against North Shore by a 4-1 score to move its record to 4-2-3 in Conference A-I. Kayla Murphy, Liz Stutzman, Haley O’Hanlon and Sam Miesemer all found the back of the net for the Lady Trojans, who have now won four of their last five games.

Field Hockey: The Lady Trojans put on a show against visiting Floral Park, winning by an 8-0 score for their fourth consecutive shutout. Alexandra Bruno scored two goals to extend her scoring streak to five straight games. Garden City stands as one of two teams in Conference I without a loss at 6-0-1 on the season.

MALVERNE

Malverne/East Rockaway boys soccer is in action on Oct. 6 at West Hempstead and the girls volleyball team will host Cold Spring Harbor.

MERRICK

Boys Soccer: Calhoun and MacArthur played in a tightly contested matchup on Wednesday afternoon, with the visiting Generals pulling out a late goal to end the game tied at 1-1. Harry Davis, who now has four goals in his last four games, scored a first half goal for the Colts off of an assist from Justin Bergman. Calhoun moves to 4-3-1 on the season.

Girls Soccer: Calhoun came out on top once again this week with a 4-0 win at Syosset, following up a 6-0 win on Monday against Long Beach. Michelle Iacono scored twice and both Kristina Gandolfo, who leads the Lady Colts in goals, and Taylor Sipos scored one along with an assist. Calhoun remains as the lone undefeated team in Conference AA-II at 7-0-2 this season.

Boys Volleyball: The Colts put up a strong showing at Syosset, dropping the match in four sets. Joe Hernandez and Dylan Darnaud played well, but Calhoun drops to 1-5 in Conference I this season.

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Colts were downed by Division in straight sets, just weeks after they came out on top by the same results against the Lady Dragons. Despite strong efforts from the likes of Jess Ruggiero, Kelly Gallo and Lauren Strecnic, Calhoun falls to 5-3 in Conference A-II.

Boys Badminton: Calhoun is back on track after a close 4-3 win at home against Great Neck North. The Colts now stand at 2-4 after Tas Choudhury battled in a three-set win at the first singles spot to give his team the deciding point.

MINEOLA           

Boys Soccer: Mineola topped North Shore on the road to advance its record to 7-1-1 on the season and keep pace with Island Trees in Conference VII. Paul Sandoval scored the lone goal in the first half. The defense, led by the likes of Daniel Muller and Richie Forte, limited North Shore to just a single shot on goal.

LEVITTOWN

Division

Boys Soccer: Division and Lawrence remained in a scoreless tie until Shane McLaughlin scored the eventual game-winner in the final 10 minutes to give the Blue Dragons an exciting win. Division holds a slim lead for the Conference V lead over Hewlett with a 6-1-2 overall record this season.

Girls Volleyball: Division defeated visiting Calhoun in straight sets by a score of 26-24, 25-16 and 25-20 to advance to 2-8 in Conference A-II. All-around solid play was displayed by Kristen Aquila, Kim Pepe and Julie Weidler in the win. The Lady Dragons avenged a 3-0 loss to the Lady Colts last month.

Island Trees

Boys Soccer: Island Trees has been one of the most dominant teams in boys soccer this season, winning again on Wednesday with a 7-1 final score against visiting Roosevelt. Adonis Martinez led the Bulldogs with a pair of goals, as well as an assist. Lucas Panebianco and Anthony Leonick both had a goal and an assist as well to improve to 7-0-1 in Conference VII.

MacArthur

Boys Soccer: MacArthur escaped Calhoun High School with a 1-1 tie on Wednesday afternoon following a late goal from Kenneth Balling. The result could end up as a momentum swing as the Generals have struggled to find their winning ways so far this season. MacArthur is now 0-6-1 on the season in Conference AA-II.

Girls Soccer: What a run MacArthur has had over the last few weeks. After losing to Farmingdale in September, the Lady Generals defeated Oceanside, Massapequa, Hicksville and Mepham. On Wednesday, Farmingdale defeated the the Lady Generals again by a 2-0 score. Jenna Cozza had a season-high 10 saves in the effort, as MacArthur drops to 5-2-0 in Conference AA-I.

LONG BEACH

Boys Volleyball: Long Beach had won its previous four matches coming into Wednesday, but the Marines fell to defending Nassau County champion Massapequa in three sets. Despite solid play from the likes of Andrew Still and Bret O’Neill, the Chiefs looked impressive early on. Long Beach now stands at 5-2 in Conference AA-I.

Boys Badminton: Long Beach won in convincing fashion on the road at Mepham by a 6-1 decision. Russell Goetz, Bryan Heran and Gavin Enright all helped the team to advance to 5-1 on the season thus far.

LYNBROOK

Girls Volleyball: Lynbrook volleyball continued its unforgettable season with a sweep of Valley Stream South to move to a perfect 10-0 in Conference A-II. Captain Kasey Keller led with 12 kills and Annamarie D-Agostino added five kills and seven aces.

Girls Tennis: The Lady Owls played a talented Massapequa team at home, and it was the Chiefs who pulled out a close 5-2 win on Wednesday. Great overall play was displayed by Olivia Watman, Amanda Gaimaro and Isabella Peresiper for Lynbrook, which is currently 6-4 in Conference B-II.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE

Boys Soccer: The Cyclones escaped Garden City with a tie after the two teams scored early in the first half, eventually ending the matchup in a 1-1 tie. The team's lone goal came from Kyle Morrisey off of an assist from Alessandro Pugliese. The tie was South Side’s first of the season, as its record moves to 3-3-1 in Conference IV this season.

Girls Soccer: The Lady Cyclones found the back of the net often in front of their fans on Wednesday, defeating Seaford 8-0. The eight goals is a new season-high for the team, as Christina Klaum had an exceptional game with four total points -- two goals and two assists. Ten other players recorded at least one goal or one assist in the win, moving South Side to 6-1-2 this season.

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Cyclones swept a tough Kennedy team on the road, led by Allison Glass with 12 kills and Grace Healey with 10. South Side is 8-2 in Conference A-I and is battling with 7-0 Wantagh for a conference title.

Girls Swimming: The Lady Cyclones swam hard at Hewlett on Wednesday, but fell by a close 12-point margin, 57-45 in the Conference III meeting.

SEAFORD

Boys Soccer: Seaford lost to Valley Stream North by a 3-0 score despite a season-high 12 saves from senior goalkeeper Brian Graziose. The Vikings previously defeated North by a 2-0 score at home last month, but their latest decision drops the overall team record to 3-4-0 in Conference VII.

Girls Soccer: Seaford struggled against one of the best teams in Long Island in South Side on Wednesday, losing by an 8-0 score. Despite the result, Deanna Moore had an exceptional game with more than 20 saves for the Lady Vikings, who now hold a 2-7-1 record this season.

WANTAGH

Boys Soccer: The Warriors caught a tough break as they dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting New Hyde Park. Wantagh was called for a penalty early in the second half, resulting in a penalty kick goal. The latest meeting was the second of two regular season games between these teams and the second time Wantagh has come up short. The team falls to 2-5-1 overall this season.

Girls Soccer: Despite being just an eighth-grader, Francesca Venezia has stepped up as a top scorer for Wantagh this season, as she scored two goals to help defeat Bethpage 3-1 on Wednesday. Down 1-0 at the half, the Lady Warriors scored three in the second half to advance their record to 4-1-2 and extend their winning streak to three games.

Girls Volleyball: Wantagh swept Roslyn at home to remain undefeated and keep pace with South Side in Conference A-I. Captain Jenny Illibassi had 14 kills and Carly Simeone added 29 assists to lead a very talented offensive unit this season.

WEST HEMPSTEAD

Boys Soccer: Luis Escobar, Alex Martinez and Rolando Martinez all put in goals for West Hempstead in a great 3-0 win at home on Wednesday, with Alex’s goal counting as the eventual game-winner. The Rams are currently the first place team in Conference VI at 4-3-1 overall, leading the likes of Valley Stream South and Lynbrook.
