Lady Mules Lax Defeats Rams in Double OT

Malverne-East Rockaway's Sydney Johnson scores game winner in double overtime to beat West Hempstead.

It was a back-and-forth game between the Malverne/East Rockaway and West Hempstead girls lacrosse teams on Thursday afternoon, but the Mules finally took home the win, 10-9, in double overtime.

Malverne jumped out to a big 4-1 lead to start the game, thanks to goals from Sydney Johnson, Halle Johnson and Alexa Germany.

The Lady Rams were able to close out the first half on a high note with goals from Katie Lynch and Melissa Kosick to bring the score to 4-3.

West Hempstead kept the offensive momentum going to start the second half, scoring two quick goals to take a 5-4 lead.

Midfielder Nikki Roeill then tied the game up for Malverne with a big shot from the middle of the crease.

With the score tied at five a piece, sophomore sensation Taylor Cussen stepped up big for the Mules, scoring the next four goals.

Cussen led all scorers in the game with four goals and one assist.

The Lady Rams rallied to tie the score 9-9 in the closing minutes of the second half on goals from Lynch and freshman Nina Boria.

Both teams played on deep into double overtime when Sydney Johnson was able to belt the ball past goalkeeper Taryn Squiciarino for the 10-9 victory.

"It was an exciting game and a big win for us," said Malverne/East Rock Head coach Nicole Beauford. "It boosts our teams morale and I think we can build on this win going into our final conference game on Saturday against Great Neck South."

The Mules are now 2-11 (2-4 conference.)

The Rams are  2-10 (2-6.) They will play their final game of the season at Roslyn on Saturday at 3 pm.
