Lynbrook Defeated by Farmingdale, 10-3

Dalers' five goals in four minutes downs Owls.

Lynbrook (1-2) was first on the scoreboard, but Farmingdale (1-2) had the last word, beating the Owls, 10-3, in a non-league game on Tuesday at .

"We didn't know what we'd be able to do, but we hung with [Farmingdale] for the 1st quarter, but then it got a little out of control," said Owls coach Bill Leighley. "The kids responded a little bit in the 1st quarter, they didn't know how it would turn out."

Though Farmingdale — the top seed in Conference I — maintained possession for much of the 1st quarter, Lynbrook's defense stood strong, forcing several wide shots and not allowing the Dalers' scorers near the front of the net.

With 5:53 left in the 1st quarter, the Owls took a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior forward Anthony Rainone, assisted by senior midfielder Andrew Mehr. The lead held up until the end of the quarter, when Farmingdale senior midfielder Korey Hendrickson took a desperation shot from just inside midfield, beating Lynbrook's senior goaltender Ethan Mirenberg.

Farmingdale took the lead for good just one minute into the 2nd quarter, and it appeared the two teams would be in a close game headed into the second half. But Farmingdale scored five goals in the final four minutes of the half, giving them a commanding 7-1 lead.

Lynbrook was able to slow Farmingdale's offense in the second half, giving up just three more goals. Owls senior forward Steven Marrandino added a goal off an assist from junior midfielder Luke Spitzer at the start of the 3rd quarter, and the two teamed up on another goal six minutes later, with Spitzer scoring off the assist from Marrandino.

Farmingdale coach Bob Hartranft said it was a relief to get the win, as the team had nearly doubled the shot total of their previous two opponents, but lost in both contests.

"We needed it," Hartranft said. Speaking on the number of wide shots his team had in the 1st quarter, the Dalers' coach said he told the squad they needed to settle down and concentrate. "Don't try and be so fine with the shooting. They're trying to put in under the crossbar … just put it on goal, make 'em make a save."

Mirenberg had 10 saves for the Owls before being replaced in the second half by junior goaltender Jake Siciliano, who had eight saves. Farmingdale senior goaltender Mike Palmer had four saves; junior Frank Deluca had one save.

Lynbrook will host Friends Academy on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
