Lynbrook Takes Two of Three Versus Lawrence

Strong pitching leads Owls to victories after dropping first game at home.

Lynbrook (9-2) took a three-game series from Lawrence (3-6) over the past week — two games to one — to remain in second place in Conference A-III, behind Plainedge. Lawrence is last in the conference.

Each game of the series was won by the road team. Lawrence won at Lynbrook in the opening game, only to drop the next two games on its home field.

In the first game, Brandon Burrell picked up the win for the Golden Tornadoes of Lawrence after striking out seven Owls batters. Will Norris suffered his first loss of the season for Lynbrook after winning his first three starts on the mound. Anthony Montilli hit an RBI double in the fourth to give Lawrence a 1-0 lead, and Eddie Robinson hit a two-run single in the sixth to bolster the scoring in a 4-2 win for Lawrence.

In the second game, Lynbrook came back strong behind a complete-game shutout from ace pitcher Alex Weingarten, leading the Owls to a  7-0 victory. Weingarten has a perfect 4-0 record this season and recorded 13 strikeouts while giving up just three hits. The performance extended his streak of not giving up an earned run to an impressive 24 innings.

In the third and deciding game, it was the Lynbrook pitching that got the job done again, with Dan Grossi pitching his first career no-hitter in an 8-2 win over Lawrence. He allowed four walks, which led to the two runs given up, but struck out 11 batters to give Lynbrook the series.

There is no doubt that the Lynbrook pitching staff, led by Weingarten and Grossi, has the ability to help the team top the conference and make a deep run into the playoffs, a level the Owls have not reached for the past few seasons.

Lawrence may fall short of the playoff picture, with Lynbrook and powehouse Plainedge (11-0) leading the way in the top two spots. The Golden Tornadoes will take on Bethpage in another conference series starting on May 2.

Lynbrook will look to continue their strong push as they take on an undefeated Plainedge team on the road. The critical three-game series begins May 2.
