NYPD Officers From Long Island Released From Hospital After Being Shot

The officers were struck during a furious gunfight in Brooklyn on Saturday.

With his family and fellow NYPD officers at his side, officer William Reddin was released from a Brooklyn hospital on Tuesday.

Reddin, of Lynbrook, and officer Andrew Yurkiw, of Wantagh, were injured during a shootout with a suspect in Bed-Stuy early Saturday morning.

Reddin, a father of two with another child on the way, was struck in the right hip during the exchange of gunfire. Yurkiw, who was treated and released from the hospital on Saturday, was saved by his bulletproof vest.

According to police, uniformed housing police officers approached a suspect after they heard a shot fired near the intersection of Quincy Street and Malcolm X Boulevard around 3:20 a.m. Saturday. The suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Jamal Funes, of New Jersey, allegedly pointed a revolver at them and fled in a vehicle. The two officers followed the suspect and radioed for assistance.

Officers engaged in gunfire with Funes after he crashed into a marked patrol car while traveling the wrong-way at the intersection of Lexington Avenue and Malcolm X Boulevard, police said. Officers fired at Funes several times, striking him.

It is unclear if Reddin and Yurkiw were hit by shots fired by Funes or from friendly fire by their fellow officers. More than a half-dozen officers fired 30 shots during the shootout.

A .357 revolver was recovered from the front seat of Funes’ car with five spent shell casings, police said.

Funes remains in critical condition at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn.
