Playoffs: Lynbrook Eliminated by Garden City

Lady Trojans rough up Lady Owls, 18-2.

Garden City (16-0) continued its undefeated streak into the playoffs with an 18-2 victory over Lynbrook (12-3) in the Nassau County Class B quarterfinals Friday.

During the pep-up cheer moments before the start of the first half, Lynbrook rallied loudly, preparing for its game against the top-ranked girls lacrosse team in the state. Unfortunately, 21 seconds into the game, Garden City's Catherine McTiernan plowed right through Lynbrook's defense for the first goal. This would establish the trend of scoring throughout the game.

At the 15-minute mark of the first half, Garden City led 9-0. Julie Wigand scored Lynbrook's first goal at 14:54, and Nicole Pataky scored the second goal at the 7-minute mark. By this time, the score was 12-2, and after Garden City scored again at the 2-minute mark, Lynbrook's defense started to get a bit tougher. Garden City led 13-2 at halftime, and the crowd could hear Lynbrook head coach Vinny Tetro getting his team amped up and prepared for the second half.

Garden City's Carly Knowles slipped on the field and was injured toward the end of the second half. She was taken out of the game, and may have suffered a concussion. Her condition is yet to be announced.

Lynbrook's head coach congratulated his team on the game and season they had this year: "We had a great season, and I feel the family that we have become," Tetro said. "We did an amazing job this year, and while this is our last time together, we'll always remember it."

Garden City's head coach, Diane Chapman, shared her thoughts on the game: "Lynbrook is a great team, and we had to play today from start to finish. Unfortunately we had an injury today (Carly Knowles), but hopefully she'll be okay and will be able to continue."
