Rain Holds Off For Lynbrook High School Graduation

The class of 2017 had clear skies for its sendoff from the school.

As the clouds began to darken over the Marion Street field, it looked as if the graduates of the Lynbrook High School Class of 2017 might have to make a mad dash before the skies opened up on their commencement ceremony. But as luck would have it, the rain held out, the last graduate received his diploma, hats were tossed and cheers rang out. It was a ending for a class of students who have repeatedly distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, the arts and in service to their community.

Salutatorian Hannah Burton spoke about achieving the seemingly unachievable. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was in kindergarten, Hannah faced her share of obstacles.

"But I have not and will not let this stop me, just as you all should not let your own unique hardships hinder you on the path to success," she said. "The challenges in life are what make you you."

Valedictorian Thomas Postiglione spoke about old memories and new beginnings. He said one of the biggest lessons he learned in high school was, "Don’t overcomplicate things. Don’t try to be someone you are not. Instead, find your passion and pursue it. Dream big and never give up. Shoot for the moon because you will land among the stars."

Using a clever acronym, Principal Joseph Rainis addressed the class of 2017 about sticking to the FACTs. He advised them to face their fears, have a positive attitude, show good character and use their time wisely. "Do not let fear limit your dreams or crush your goals," he said.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Melissa Burak encouraged the graduates to take inspiration from the life and work of Louis Armstrong and his famous rendition of "What a Wonderful World."

"We have given you all we could," she said. "It is now time for you to give back to this wonderful world. Follow your passions. Sharpen your skills. Don’t let others dampen your spirit. Continue to share your talents. It is a wonderful world. However, it is a better place since you came along. Please continue to make the world a better and more wonderful place for all of us."
