Sixth Grade Students Read to First Graders at Willow Road Elementary
Valley Stream School District 13 recently hosted a special literacy event at Willow Road Elementary School
Valley Stream School District 13 recently hosted a special literacy event at Willow Road Elementary School, giving sixth-grade students an opportunity to read and share stories with first-grade students. As part of the event, Students in Ms. Kiernan and Ms. Byrnes’ sixth-grade class went to the school’s library to share a traditional snowy folktale with Mrs. Coryell and Mrs. VanEron’s first-grade class. The classes paired off, with one sixth grade student and one first grade student per group. The older students shared and discussed “The Mitten” written by Jan Brett to their younger counterparts.
After the students’ one-on-one time, librarian Ms. Weik gathered the students for a larger group discussion about the illustrations and story elements of the wintertime children’s book. The read-along was a beneficial educational event for all students, helping younger students expand their vocabulary = and knowledge of sentence structure while the sixth older students learned how to articulate discussion topics and interact with younger students.
Willow Road Elementary is eager to host many upcoming events that will allow students of different ages to learn from each other. For more information about the District, visit the website at: http://www.valleystream13.com
