West Hempstead School Board Appoints New Superintendent

At its business meeting on Tuesday, the West Hempstead Board of Education unanimously appointed Patricia Sullivan-Kriss as the district’s new superintendent of schools, following the retirement of current superintendent John Hogan.

Sullivan-Kriss’ appointment is effective July 1, 2016, with a term running through June 30, 2020.

Sullivan-Kriss is currently the superintendent of schools for the Hauppauge School District, a position she has held since 2006.

Under her leadership, the district implemented numerous programmatic changes for students, including Foreign Language in Elementary Schools (FLES), Innovations Math (K-6), a literacy collaborative, the International Baccalaureate program, Advanced Placement enhancements and a travel abroad program. Furthermore, during her tenure in Hauppauge, Sullivan-Kriss developed and implemented a $1.5 million technology initiative, developed a multi-year plan to address facility improvements and worked collaboratively with the teachers association to develop a consistent teacher observation and evaluation process.

“I welcome the opportunity to serve as West Hempstead’s next superintendent of schools and I look forward to meeting the staff, parents and students of this great district,” Sullivan-Kriss said. “I am excited to continue the district’s upward trajectory and to introduce expanded opportunities for all students.”

Sullivan-Kriss, of Rockville Centre, is also president-elect of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, a professional and advocacy organization that provides professional development opportunities for its members and advocates on a local, state and national level for public education.

“We are excited to welcome Ms. Sullivan-Kriss to the West Hempstead School District,” Board of Education President Karen Brohm said. “I am confident that her depth and breadth of experience, as well as her innovation in the education field, will lead our district to the next level of success.”

Leading up to the official start of Sullivan-Kriss’ term in early July, the district will host opportunities for staff, parents, students and community members to meet and welcome her in person.
