Will 2020 become the era for a new Scarlet letter?

Obviously, not the design initiated by the famed author, Nathanial Hawthorne.

When the historical fiction was first published in 1850 it was not only the first mass produced book, but also immensely popular. Today it is considered a classic in literature and explores themes of legalism, guilt and sin.`

I do wonder if the central core of the story will be applicable again; obviously, with a different admission of guilt.

Will the new scarlet letter be an admission of having been tested positive for the virus or another unknown form of contagion?

Will a wearer advise if he or she has chosen to self isolate, possibly avoiding the peril of any unanticipated close encounters?

In lieu of wearing an actual garment, it might be simpler to view pictures posted on facebook. That would allow a simpler solution permitting others to make a determination before any physical contact or social interaction,

Is it possible a new classification and/or onus will apply to those who actively engage in law enforcement as well as otherswho choose not to participate in organized protection?

Will it become permissible for a citizen to declare he or she is not related to anyone in law enforcement or public service. This designation would eliminate any undue suspicion immediately.

It could advertise a willingness to demonstrate politically. The wearer would then be easily identified as being free of all bias.

Will gender be used in lieu of a scarlet letter, s for straight, g for gay and of course, t for trans?

That would eliminate parade crowds and lessen fear of possible covid transmission.

It is a bit ironic that a story based to some degree on imagination comes into focus over a century later with significance.

Possibly each period of history had their own interpretation of the so called scarlet letter of shame.

The one depicted by the garment worn by Hester Prynne of course, is obsolete. Adultery no longer is an impediment to politicians or celebrities or to a great degree, social acceptance.

Rightfully, the Catholic church has paid and will continue to pay a price for child abuse. However, some believe that both more than a few prominent citizens (and do I dare suggest members of royalty) have emerged intact from the Jeffrey Epstein cloud. To my knowledge, no scarlet letters are being worn at this time.

Undoubtedly, there will be a surge of popular opinion in the years to come based on both fear of the unknown and the rising surge of civil division. This may mandate immediate identification of not only belief systems, but also political and moral affiliations.

I hope I am able to maintain anonymity, but I wonder how long that will be possible.
