Not Merry Christmas

No one loves a Grinch!

Life has changed for the majority of Americans.

Some things were good.

In today’s world, distance is a reality.

Families are separated geographically because of career choices, and yes, opportunities.

The older generation has learned to travel and visit their offspring in order to meet the youngest arrivals.

No longer do extended clans meet accidentally on Main Street or Broadway and greet each other with pleasure.

Teenagers are wiser, but lack the sublime comfort of an environment surrounded by older more sophisticated cousins, career minded aunts, bachelor uncles and doting Grandparents.

However, once a year, many clans chose to return briefly to yesteryear without today’s angst.

We celebrate Christmas.

We make sugar cookies together in crowded kitchens, despite the luxury of being able to buy, ship and savor gourmet brands.

We indulge in traditional home cooked calorie laden feasts without calculating the nutritional disaster on a Lose It app.

We raise cups or Waterford goblets of good cheer when we are surrounded by the loved ones willing to face the perils of holiday travel.

We rejoice if or when any or all of those we love arrive back home to celebrate Christmas

The traditional sounds we hear on Pandora, Sirius and Apple music instantly return us to the long ago, but always remembered, music of childhood.

The majority of Americans, despite distinct political differences, will ever treasure the festive month of December.

We wrap ourselves in the serene warmth of Christmas generosity when we encounter anyone in need.

We are kinder and more compassionate, and yes, for a brief magic moment, happier.

The Grinch of impeachment arriving this week is not merely poor timing by both sides of the political arena, but rather an intrusion.

It appears to say “Bah Humbug” when so many of us only wish to hear, “Merry Christmas.”
