Car Driven by Massapequa Man Strikes Pedestrian

BREAKING: The man who was struck is in critical condition, police say.

MELVILLE, NY - A 43-year-old man was critically injured after being struck by a car while trying to cross Route 110 in Melville early Friday, police said.

John Erickson, of Mount Sinai, was attempting to cross Route 110 at the intersection of Spagnoli Road at about 1:05 a.m. when he was hit by a Mercedes-Benz that was heading south on Route 110, police said.

Erickson was airlifted via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

The driver of the car, 46-year-old Maurice White, of Massapequa, was not injured and no criminal charges have been filed.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
