The Massapequa Public Library in participation of LONG ISLAND READS in celebration of National Library Week (April 8th - 14th), will present "Smoke & Mirrors; Delusion & Dispair: The Story of Terezin" presented by the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Players of the Posner Memorial Library, on April 29, 2012, at 2 p.m in the Auditorium.
This year’s Long Island Read book, The Lost Wife, by Alyson Richman, covers one aspect of Terezin; this play, written by Marcia Posner, fills in the rest of the ghetto history and activity, which includes the art department of The Lost Wife.
The Gestapo used Terezin as a ghetto during World War II, concentrating Jews from many countires. More than 150,000 Jews were sent there. Although it was not an extermination camp, about 33,000 died in the ghetto itself, mostly due to the appalling conditions arising out of extreme population density.
