Football Playoff Preview: Massapequa vs. Oceanside

Chiefs face uphill battle against top seed.

Massapequa went into the 2010 season hoping to be major contenders this year in the Conference 1 but fell short of  that goal. The Chiefs finished the season with a .500 record (4-4)  and found themselves themselves in eighth place, just barely making the playoffs. To make matters worse, their first round opponent this Saturday, the Oceanside Sailors (7-1), are the number one ranked team in the Conference.

Oceanside came within a hair of having an undefeated season. Their only  loss came in their final game when they were beaten by Freeport in overtime. Oceanside brings a strong passing attack to the matchup. Quarterback Tyler Heuer had over 1800 yards passing with 118 completions in 2010. His go to guy is wide receiver Gene Garay who jetted his way to over 800 receiving yards. These two are a deadly combination combining for 11 touchdowns this season. But don't count out Oceanside's ability to run the ball. Running back Nick Sherry had 620 yards and 7 touchdowns on 75 rushing attempts..

Although Massapequa lost to Oceanside in the Chiefs'season opener, their offense has improved dramatically since then. Quarterback Ryan Neu has displayed his passing skills by connecting with wide receiver Steven Romano. The pair has scored 7 touchdowns. Running back Vassili Grigorakos  has had a tremendous season  scoring two return touchdowns as well as two rushing touchdowns this season. But Massapequa's secret weapon is their wildcat formation with Michael Barry. Barry tallied eight touchdowns in the regular season.

Massapequa's defense has had a great season with leaders such as Rich Ruiz, Lee Henderson, and Rich Staubitz on the defensive line. The Chief defense has only allowed an average of 25 points per game. The Sailors' defense has been dominant as well allowing an average of 15 points per game.

Massapequa and Oceanside must do the same thing in order to win–stop each other's passing game. Whichever defense provides better pass coverage should come out the winner.
