An Innocent Question

But Why

We were watching a popular news program and it quickly became obvious the regular commentator was missing.

Still the question was virtually shocking in its innocence.

“Was he accused?”

I had to answer “Yes, but I don't believe found guilty.”

The inquiry came from the proverbial mouth of a babe. Yet it perfectly portrayed the age of “Me Too.”

This morning the headlines reflected the first publicized suicide resulting from the current form of the Salem trials.

And I wonder.

Will there be a reaction to the “overreaction” of the escalating era of accusations?

Will there be a reluctance to publicize memories going back almost a decade?

It’s hard to avoid the accusations, the emerging questionable memories, the sudden loss of familiar faces on TV networks or in the public arena.

My young questioner is not a devotee of tabloids, but an ardent follower of news and current events.

Like his Grandfather, he keeps his opinions private; rarely allowing his innermost feelings to be viewed. He is also never judgmental which is why the inquiry was so surprising.

When we do the NYT crossword puzzle each Sunday, I am thrilled at his scope of vocabulary and knowledge.

Still I felt such an innocent question disturbing.

Why? Because it reflects the current pulse of our world.

Yesterday the headlines, both internet, and TV confirmed a sexual rendezvous almost fifty years ago between two headliners.

I have to ask? Why? Both celebrities have long since left this world.

I am certain both have survivors.

The publicized liaison did not have any criminal aspects, nor was it done in a public arena.

Are we becoming a nation of voyeurs? I don’t believe in censorship, but I do strive for what once was called decorum or possibly good taste,

Or maybe even common sense.

Today’s earth is complex, offering many challenges. Is it necessary to peek into bedrooms of 50 years ago?

Will the escalator of interest soon move away from publicized accusations and unconfirmed recollections?

It is disturbing to think of the consequences if we don’t.
