It Must Be

A Bad Dream

It has to be a misprint

It is too outrageous to be true, or even Fake News.

No one could have conjured up such an incomprehensible story.

No, I find it difficult to believe that responsible lawmakers and esteemed leaders of our elected Congress would plan a seven day excursion out of our country while we are in the crisis of a government shutdown.

Certainly, not the self righteous Speaker of the House who takes such a firm position on morality.

She as the Mother of five, would have compassion for the 43,000 members of the Coast Guard serving without pay while Congress is unable or unwilling to negotiate. No, our Nancy wouldn’t plan to take a trip abroad at this time.

Yet, that’s what is being reported.

I was pleased when I learned she hadn’t joined the 39 members of Congress who left the cold weather for their trip to Puerto Rico instead of remaining and trying to settle the impasse currently strangling our nation.

Of course, that trip had long been planned, and I believe there was also going to be a special performance of Hamilton, and maybe no one in their family has been financially affected by their seemingly inability to negotiate. They probably don’t even know any of the unpaid Border Patrol Agents still reporting for duty daily.

And yes, it is cold in D.C., and the beaches in Puerto Rico are amazing. Senator Bob Menendez did seem to be having such fun in the pictures shown on TV

But 39 elected Congressional members left our country while we are in crisis. None of them stayed home in their heated offices or tried to resolve the problem facing America.

And then today I learn that another Congressional delegation had planned a trip to Europe.

I begin to wonder if I have fallen asleep and had a bad dream, or perhaps another nightmare.

Then for some obscure reason I remember Humpty Dumpty, who, of course, never was elected to Congress.

Yet, when he fell off the wall, he could never be put together again.

And sometimes, that happens with reputations even if it takes four years for people to remember.
