Just A Thank You

Note

I am a strong believer in thank you notes, and Hilaria (or is it Hilary) I strongly believe you are due one.

You have done something that (until this week,) I believed impossible. Because of uou, I (along with countless others in lockdown) have been able to escape the staccato repetition of dire predictions of death by Covid or a radical political uprising.

It has been such a blessed relief, and while I realize it has definitely caused you angst, please know I am quite grateful.

You changed your name, and possibly told a white lie or two. So what?

Who (including me) hasn’t denied the truth about weight, age, or some other innocuous matter. I doubt many people were affected one way or another about your claim to be Spanish.

I know little about you or your husband. Obviously, I have enjoyed his acting abilities and realize our paths may have crossed decades ago while we were both at the Massapequa Diner. However, I do not twitter or tweet and have never had an interest in yoga, so your claims have had no effect on my world.

That was until this week, when my Ipad was flooded with your name (or names) amid impassioned accusations. At first I was intrigued until I wondered, “So what did she do that was so bad?”

Okay, you camouflaged the truth a bit, but you also have had four (or is it five) babies in less than ten years. With all the diaper changes, late night feedings, you may have distorted the facts a bit. I wonder if there is a woman who doesn’t understand your need for a bit of pretense (at least until they were all toilet trained).

So I must say thank you for giving me a week free of nightmares about a new strain of Covid or another year of quarantining. I have been in lockdown since March, and that would be quite difficult.

And since now I am far from family, I did enjoy the pictures of the lovable babies. Relax, Hilaria (or Hilary) turn off the news, and I hope this is the first of many thank you notes.

You did many isolated Americans a favor. It doesn’t matter a bit how you spell your name.
