The veterinarian estimated the tortoise's age based on his weight to be around 20 years old.

Terris says that everyone in the office was "quite surprise" to see the tortoise come in but that it is not that uncommon to receive tortoises found in the area.

The veterinarian's office also runs a non-profit, the Long Island Wildlife and Animal Rescue, which receives wounded animals all the time.

As for the tortoise, he will stay at the Massapequa office until someone claims him. If someone believes that the tortoise belongs to them, they must bring proof of ownership such as a photo or vet records.

Anyone who claims to own the tortoise can call the office at 516-797-8387.
