MASSAPEQUA, NY — Juliana Christy, a 22-year-old nursing student at Molloy College, is doing her part to help healthcare workers fighting the coronavirus, even though she can't join them just yet.

Christy is working to raise money to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE) for hospital workers in the area by making and selling bracelets online. So far, she has already collected more than $3,000 for the cause.

She is calling her project Corona Cuffs. People can order personalized beaded bracelets for $7, and the money goes to help purchase more PPE.

"When we were children, my sister and I would make beaded bracelets for fun to wear or give to friends in family, so Corona Cuffs are an updated version of our childhood hobby,” Christy said. "The idea came about from trying to find some extra activities to keep busy now that we have to stay at home due to the precautions that have been put into place to prevent the spread of COVID-19."

Christy said that she originally ordered some beads online to make bracelets for herself and her family. Her sister had the idea to get donations for the bracelets.

"We thought that we would only be making a couple of bracelets, but word quickly spread, and our number of orders dramatically increased in just a few days," Christy said.

Christy has continued to receive more orders for bracelets, and is working as fast as she can to make them.

"Originally just our close friends and families placed orders to buy bracelets, but as we shared the information on social media, we began receiving orders from friends of friends, and from nurses and other healthcare workers who were interested in supporting the cause," she said.

You can order your own Corona Cuff by clicking here and filling out the order form.
