Massapequa Confirms More COVID Cases, But Schools Won't Close

MASSAPEQUA, NY — The Massapequa School District has seen more confirmed cases of the coronavirus in its buildings this week, but classes will continue.

Earlier this week, the district closed Berner Middle School on Wednesday to clean it after student was confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus. The students went to remote learning for the day while the building was disinfected.

In a letter to parents written on Thursday, Superintendent Lucille Iconis confirmed two more cases in the district: one at Birch Lane Elementary School and one at Massapequa High School. She said the district discussed the cases with the Nassau County Department of Health, and said that closing those buildings was not warranted.

"We are in constant contact with the Nassau County Department of Health and will follow all necessary protocols to reduce exposure to other students or staff," Iconis wrote. "We will continue to take all necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of the Massapequa community as this remains our foremost priority."

Many schools across Long Island have faced temporary closures as cases of the coronavirus are identified among the students and staff in the buildings. Schools have policies in place to help keep people from contracting the virus, including mandatory mask wearing and social distancing.
