Massapequa Student Donates Community Piano to Westfield Sunrise
Westfield Sunrise Mall to Help Student Reach Eagle Scout Status
Westfield Sunrise Mall has partnered with Massapequa Student, David Carroll, to help him achieve his dream of becoming an Eagle Scout. David’s donated piano to Westfield Sunrise, will remain in the mall until March 18, as part of an initiative to bring fun and accessible music to the community.
“I had seen public pianos in other communities and I really enjoyed playing them,” said Carroll. “I thought bringing the piano to Westfield Sunrise would be a unique and out of the box approach for my Eagle Scout project. I have been a musician since I was little and I wanted to incorporate my love for music into this project to spread music to the whole community.”
The piano is located on the upper level of the mall near Hollister, for shoppers to play and enjoy. After that, David will donate the piano to the Massapequa School District for use in one of their schools. David Carroll has been taking piano lessons since he was six years old. He also plays the baritone saxophone in the Massapequa High School band and is in the chorus and crooners musical groups at school. Carroll was in all-county chorus this year and is the lead singer and guitar player in his band, Without Caution.

“David’s commitment to community service is very inspiring and we are happy and excited to help him become an Eagle Scout,” says Vanessa Mitton, Marketing Director at Westfield Sunrise. “This unique public piano project will bring live music to Westfield Sunrise and we encourage everyone in the community to stop by and try it.”
The Westfield Sunrise initiative is Carroll’s service project, which is one of the last steps he needs to take to reach the Eagle Scout rank. There will be an Eagle Scout Board of Review, likely before the end of this school year to determine if Carroll can become an

Eagle Scout. Carroll is currently a Life Scout, which is the rank before Eagle. He is also an assistant patrol leader for Troop 96 in Wantagh.
To become an Eagle Scout, a scout has to have achieved the six ranks prior to Eagle, including Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life. A scout also has to demonstrate leadership in the community and in the troop and earn 21 merit badges. Carroll has exceeded that requirement and currently has 27 badges.
Musicians and chorus members from Massapequa High School as well as Carroll, will be at the mall to entertain shoppers throughout the next two weeks every day after school and on the weekends.
