Neither Precise Nor

Efficient

Ah yes, I tend to plan too much.

I am addicted to lists, schedules, appointments, all documented in several places, i.e. ipad, calendar, and MacBook Air.

Then the Good Lord intervenes, and reminds me not only of my mortality, but humanity.

Thus is was last night.

I found myself staying up far later than planned, and now for a moment of truth. Yes, I was watching “Leaving Neverland,” and I was totally absorbed in the docudrama.

However, my day had followed the precise schedule I had recorded. Bank at 1 p,m., followed by a quick trip to UPS to pick up printed versions of “This, That and A Few Other Things,” for friends who don’t read on a kindle

A quick lunch with a wonderful friend and confidante.

Back to the apartment with time to place an order with Shipt for a food delivery the following afternoon.

Interrupted with a few welcome phone calls. But naively feeling confident my day had followed my precision planning.

I made dinner in the apartment, foregoing the dining room, and finishing up the remnants of the loaf of bread I had baked over the weekend.

Decided to record the rest of Neverland about midnight, and watch the finale the following evening. After my nightly meditation, began to fall into sleep feeling quite pleased with myself.

Then the phone rang. It was 12:45 a.m., and I scrambled to find the source of the ringing. When I did, the lilting voice said, “Hi, I am just packing your grocery order. Do you need anything else?”

Ashamed, I realized I had entered 1 a.m. for delivery rather than 1 p.m..

Another lesson for me.

With massive apologies, I tried to explain without stuttering to the young women who was in a supermarket at an ungodly hour food shopping for me.

She was gracious, and explained that further calls from Shipt’s main office would come to verify my mistake. And so they did until well after 2 a.m.

I was wrong, and I learned another of life’s ongoing lessons. My lists are neither as precise as I hoped, nor am I as efficient.
