North Massapequa Zombie Home Demolished

The home sat abandoned for six years and was a blight on the community, officials say.

A vacant home that was a blight on the North Massapequa community was demolished today, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said.

"We are so pleased to bring the residents of this local community an early holiday present, as this eyesore is coming down following numerous complaints, many property cleanups and several notices of violation," said Saladino.

Since their initial inspection in 2013, town personnel visited the property, which is located on North Queens Avenue, a total of 58 times. As the legal process ensued, the condition of the property worsened, as weather naturally took its toll and the structure continued to deteriorate.

"Our residents care deeply about their communities, and they shouldn't be faced with a blight like this day after day," said Saladino. "This abandoned property sat vacant for six years while we pursued the owner to take action. The town made sure it remained safe and secure and performed several cleanups as it was often not being maintained. As is always the case, to protect our taxpayers, the cost of all necessary cleanups were subsequently put on the county's tax rolls."

Upon gaining access to the home's interior, inspectors discovered deplorable conditions, including extensive water damage, evidence of rodent infestation, suspect and just generally unsanitary and unsafe conditions. Ultimately, the Town's Department of Planning & Development worked with the bank which now owns the property and the demolition was ordered.
