But Not As

Much Fun

Spring 2020 will be long remembered for many things once the destructive thrust of the Covid 19 has been conquered.

It may even also include the addendum of the aging of female America.

Today, the 15th day, is not only a period of isolation, but also marks the precise moment when all America’s cherished beauty salons have closed and Sephora shelves are emptied.

While washing my own hair this morning, and gazing fearfully into the looking glass, I was unprepared for the stark reality.

Time can be held at abeyance but not long after the availability of professional assistance is denied.

Dependent on the length of time, most if not all females quarantine for survival, we may also reluctantly be forced to acknowledge the existence of old bones.

Brunettes (in my own experience) will rapidly view the emergence of abundant silver, gray, white and/or yellow strands that have previously been denied any light of day. Without doubt, the simplistic pony tails of memory will quickly return. We may even see a braid or two. Anything is now possible.

Sleek coiffures once tamed with conditioners and expert blow drys will run rampant and untamed. Barrettes and the long forgotten bobby pin will soon emerge in vogue.

Lips once plumped monthly will quickly revert to their original sad status. Dare I suggest sagging?

Glossy nails will shine less, be shorter and have a vague faintly remembered opague hue.

Can or will the damage, inevitably caused by the unknown days, weeks or possibly months without professional services (color, cuts, botox, plucking, tweezing and straightening) be reversed when the period of abstinence ends?

As Au Natural becomes our Look du jour, who knows if the true value and beauty of age will emerge. Women may reluctantly relax and stop pretending to be forever young. We may even admit we look like our Mothers.

I am not confident this can, will or should happen, but if or when it does, I know I won’t be alone and the only female going unrecognized.

Who knows, while we might find it challenging, it certainly won’t be as much fun.
